NUPTSE BOOTIE II
This project is a complete overhaul and redesign of the original Nuptse Bootie with updated design aesthetics, materials, and functions. Originally designed in the early 2000’s, the original Nuptse Bootie has not been modified since it’s creation. Based off the design and characteristics of the Nuptse Jacket, the original Nuptse Bootie silhouette creates it’s identity through a bold look and feel. Just like the original Nuptse Jacket, neither one has been updated since their release.

Inspiration
The original Nuptse Bootie was inspired from the Nuptse Jacket. An icon in it’s own right, the new update should reference the same icon. However, the original Nuptse Jacket has not been updated since its introduction. It is still constructed with standard stitch baffling, goose down fill, and water resistant nylon ripstop. The question was, how do we improve against an established iconic design while respecting the design DNA?
While looking at the current Nuptse Jacket, I identified which details and design elements could be improved upon and more importantly, which details should be elevated. How does one update a familiar, instantly recognizable object without losing the visual elements that established it’s identity? Familiarity, but with a twist, was the main design driver for this update. Looking at elements that could be changed with the use of color, form refinement, mixing of materials, and the use of graphics to spark curiosity.

Initial Exploration
How do I update a style that has lived untouched for so many years?
The objective is to bring modernity to this updated design by considering new construction methods, updated materials, and visual aesthetics while keeping the original design DNA intact.

Initial Design Direction
Setting ground rules was the first step for developing concepts within this collection.
- Improve fit and provide a better underfoot experience.
- Focus on traction.
- Create baffling without stitching.
- Make down insulation waterproof.

Direction Finalization
The final upper designs pushed the original Nuptse Bootie forward in two directions. The first design is a nod to the past with updated construction and refined design aesthetics. The baffling is constructed by welding the outer surface material to the waterproof membrane. This technique created a modern visual aesthetic that captured the iconic lines of the original Nuptse Bootie while updating the look. The second design leaned more into a progressive visual aesthetic with updated points of adjustability. Both designs will share the same midsole and outsole as well as the same insulation and waterproofing package.

M / W NUPTSE BOOTIE II WP
This style holds closer to the intent of the original Nuptse Bootie. Designed as a pull-on style, this pattern captures the grab and go mindset of the modern outdoor enthusiast. This is an approachable pattern that is a versatile silhouette allowing for multiple looks and consumer wearing situations.

M / W NUPTSE BOOTIE II STRAP WP
This design was inspired and created for a more progressive minded consumer that may or may not be as familiar with the history of the original Nuptse Bootie. This style has a center seam waterproof zip and top collar adjustable strap to allow for a wider variety of users and fit.

Specs
Improving underfoot cushioning, stability, and traction was the focus when updating the midsole and outsole for the Nuptse Bootie II. I proposed an improved tread pattern that leans heavily on The North Face best practices around traction. In addition, the outsole rubber placement was adjusted in combination with ground contact EVA. This change improved traction and underfoot comfort. The outsole tread design was inspired by the original Nuptse Bootie but adjustments were made that focused around improving traction, stability, and most importantly, underfoot comfort. The intent was to make the user and boots as connected as possible. In doing so, this improved the user’s experience around capability and function.
