NUPTSE MULE II
Designed for the 2021 Fall / Winter season, the Nuptse Mule II is a complete overhaul of the iconic Nuptse Mule. This design update is focused on the improvements around functionality and usability by creating a more capable outdoor slipper. The Nuptse Mule II contains the same recognizable materials and insulation as the original Nuptse Mule and includes a more protective and robust outsole.

Inspiration
Improving and updating the design of the original Nuptse Mule, while holding on to the visual look and feel, was one of the main design drivers. By identifying the visual blocking of the original Nuptse Mule pattern, looking at how color can be applied, and elevating brand proud materials was my main focus behind the update. The incorporation of graphics helped to indicate and communicate to the consumer the new design features and details of the updated silhouette.

Initial Exploration
The new design was to address a series of consumer needs and improvements. Functionality was a key factor along with determining how to get more usage out of the new concept other than just being a camp slipper. Design exploration and incorporation of an updated outsole design improved traction and protection for the user. Finally, updating and modernizing the upper baffling of the new slipper improved the functionality and fit.

Initial Design Direction
After rounds of ideation sketches, a few conceptual directions started to gain traction highlighting the visual intent and design expectations of the new slipper design. A more robust and capable outsole, that wraps up and around the sidewall, was added for protection and durability. Focusing on baffle patterning to address zonal insulation, I also improved the upper pattern to address the fit and users interaction with the product.

Direction Finalization
The final design was to capture the visual stance and aesthetics of the original Nuptse Mule while improving upon the function, fit, and durability. In addition to the updated design direction, sustainability became a major focus. The team changed all materials used in the construction and make of the slipper to 100% recycled materials, as well as updating the construction process and patterning to create a sustainable story. The one design element that changed was the removal of the stretch binding on the top collar edges. The removal of the binding helped modernize the design and visually separated the old design from the new.

Market Release
The Nuptse Mule II is a unisex design and the latest mule added to The North Face slipper line. With updated tooling, modernized baffle construction, and the addition of 100% recycled materials, the Nuptse Mule II is not only the most capable camp slipper but also the most sustainable outdoor slipper. Built for winter’s coldest days, this updated outdoor slipper is designed to keep your feet comfortable, warm, and protected all day long.

Specs
One of the major updates within the new Nuptse Mule II design is a more robust take on the tooling. The major difference from the original tooling to the new proposal was changing the construction from a calender flat molded outsole to a modified cupsole. The added protection to the toe and heel, along with an updated tread pattern, improved traction, durability, and made the slipper more functional for the user.
